Mid Century Couch
I've had my eye on a couch similar to this for about four years. I love the style, the color, the tufts... all of it! My dream couch is a gray velvet mid century sectional from Article.com that sells for over $2000. Once the kids are out of the house, I have every intention of owning one of their couches, because they are beautiful beyond words. However, right now in this time of our lives, we neither have the money nor the courage to have something like that in our living room. We try really hard to teach our children to respect the things we own, but they are kids. They're a little hard on everything! So, I've been scouting for a long, long time to find an affordable alternative. I went to several furniture stores and was amazed at how expensive couches are... even the ones I didn't like were expensive. But no local stores had anything close to what I had in mind. I concluded from my searching that if we were going to have to spend a lot for a new couch, it was worth a couple hundred extra dollars to get something I loved. We almost got one for $1400 on Amazon, but thankfully that was a bust. This little gem caught me unawares.
I found it.... weirdly.... through a sponsored post on Instagram! It said something like "Blowout Sale, up to 70% off Sectionals on Wayfair.com!" And so, curiously, I tapped on it. I submitted my email address and immediately received a 10% off coupon in my inbox, and I like coupons... So I was already giddy. Then I found a little beauty called the Vera Cruz, and for whatever reason, the right facing chaise was over $200 cheaper than the left facing, and the light grey was also less expensive than the dark grey. I don't understand sales. However, this particular model/color was on clearance for around $800, and there were only six left! As I conversed with my husband through text to see if it was a good fit, I refreshed the page to find there were only 3 left! I was sweating bullets. I wanted that couch so bad. So, I added it to my cart, added my promo code for 10% off and submitted my order for a total of $770 and prayed that it would be a good couch for our family!
I waited three weeks for it to get delivered. You'd think that after four years of waiting, those three weeks would be a breeze... ha! I was practically waiting by my phone to get a call from the delivery company, and once it came I was counting down minutes. And the morning of their arrival, I was pacing around like a crazy person and literally squealed when I saw them drive up! The assembly was a breeze, so thankfully I was able to do it easily by myself. And from there I grabbed all of the throw pillows I'd been saving and stared at the whole ensemble for a long, long time. I stare at it often.
Here's another thing. It's also incredibly convenient to have a couch for guests to sit on... and for us to sit on, too! We went 3+ months with only our brown armchair and entryway bench, and every time I would collapse in that (tub) chair to rest my feet and catch a breather, it would only be a matter of seconds before two or three kids were piled on top of me! Now there's room for all of us. Couches are kind of great.
Fun fact about our coffee table. I found it on Craigslist for $40, and luckily I have a sister in Post Falls so it was a good excuse to pick it up from CDA and then go visit her in the same trip! Coffee tables are one of those things that I'm outrageously picky about. I've looked at THOUSANDS of them over the years, and this one, along with maybe two others are the only ones I've ever truly LOVED. And the others were very pretty, modern, metal and marble masterpieces that cost close to $1000. True story! I swore I would never get a glass-top anything, because... kids. And it's true that the minute I've wiped it down with Windex, the kidlets wander in as if pulled by some unseen force to lick, touch, and smear their faces all over it. And the second it becomes dirty again, it's "meh" and they can go their way with a job well done. But I don't even care. It's at the center of our daily lives and I like the smudges. I also like to clean off the smudges. But there's something about it that makes me smile.
Also, If you take a peek at our mantle in these pictures, you can see the mirror I have propped up against the wall. That's another of my prized possessions! I found it for $45 at a local thrift store. It was a little grimy, with a wood stain finish and a few imperfections on the glass, but for the size and workmanship, my goodness. I had to have it. I cleaned it up and painted it white, and gave it a new forever home right there in our living space. I pray it never breaks, cuz it's a cool old thing.
